Among them are the purchase of Italian government bonds, investment in a limited company, investment in an innovative startup, and a philanthropic donation. All have specific requirements and fixed capital investment. Unfortunately, Italy doesn’t currently offer a direct Hospitality investment option.
Let’s take a look at the options in detail.
The Innovative Startup Investment is the cheapest Italian Investor Visa track, but it also carries the highest level of potential capital risk.
In order to qualify for the Innovative Startup Golden Visa, you will have to purchase stocks or shares in a qualifying innovative startup, i.e. in one of the companies referred to in art. 25, par. 2, of decree-law no. 179 of 18 October 2012, converted with amendments by law no. 221 of 17 December 2012 and subsequent amendments.
The startup has to be deemed “active” and “operating” (as provided for by art. 26-bis, art. 1, lett. b, TUI). Importantly, it must have filed at least one balance sheet at the date of the Investor Visa application.
The recipient company may be either listed or unlisted. Its name and tax code are a mandatory piece of information and must be indicated at the time of your Investor Visa application.
The official list of qualifying Innovative Italian Startups is updated regularly and accessible for free at startup.registroimprese.it. It is administered by the Italian Chambers of Commerce system.
To date, the investment option of purchasing stocks or shares of an Italian Limited Company has been the program track of choice for the majority of successful Italian Golden Visa applicants. This track also enables you to invest, though indirectly, in Italian hospitality.
A qualifying Italian company is considered to be “operating” (as provided for by art. 26-bis, art. 1, lett. b, TUI) if it is in active state and has already filed at least one balance sheet at the date of the visa application.
The recipient company may be either listed or unlisted. Its name and tax code are a substantial and mandatory piece of information and must be indicated at time of your Investor Visa application.
In order to qualify for the Italian Golden Visa by Public Interest Donation, you have to make a non-refundable contribution to a project or initiative of public interest in any of one of the following fields:
Given that this is a non-refundable donation, there is no minimum hold period. You won’t see your capital again.
IMPORTANT NOTE: You’ll need to submit your Italian Investor Visa application before making this non-refundable contribution, as donations made prior to your application will not be considered eligible.
Arguably, the Government Bonds option could feature the lowest risk profile of all the program tracks.
The following financial instruments are eligible:
For each bond typology, a minimum residual maturity of no less than two years is required. As with all of the other investment options, you’ll need to maintain your investment for the entire duration of your Temporary Residency in Italy.
IMPORTANT NOTE: You’ll need to submit your Italian Investor Visa application before purchasing any of these qualifying securities
For all Italian Golden Visa Investor Applicants
The Golden Visa applicant must be:
An individual over eighteen years of age, or a legal representative of a foreign legal entity authorised to commit the entity’s resources and is over eighteen years old.
Investments must be direct, financial, and entirely within one company. You can’t split or combine investments to make up the required amount. Both capital increases and purchases of already issued shares qualify.
Investments or contributions executed (even partially) before the visa application is submitted do not qualify for the Investor Visa.
